General Robert E. Lee
James Longstreet returned from convalescent leave after recovering from his wound at the Battle of the Wilderness. Richard Anderson, who had ably commanded the First Corps in Longstreet’s absence, was given command of a scratch corps created of units from around the Richmond defences.
