September 3 The 3rd North Carolina Cavalry Regiment was organized at Kinston with 1,095 men from existing independent companies under the command of Colonel John A. Baker. No other field officers were commissioned until August of 1863. Assigned to the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
