April 24 The 9th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg for three months Federal service under the command of Colonel Henry C. Longnecker, Lieutenant Colonel William H. R. Hangen and Major Charles Glantz.

  • Company B – Kittaning, Armstrong County – Captain William Sirwell
  • Company C – Carlisle, Cumberland County – Captain Christian Kuhns
  • Company D – Allentown, Lehigh County – Captain G.D. Hand
  • Company E – West Chester, Chester County – Captain James Andress
  • Company F – West Chester, Chester County – Captain Samuel Huffy
  • Company G – Easton, Northampton County – Captain Richard A. Graeffe
  • Company H – St. Clair, Schuylkill County – Captain Edward Farne
  • Company I – Chester, Delaware County – Captain Henry Edwards
  • Company K – Port Carbon, Schuylkill County – Captain Matthew Byrnes

Company B had 22 men who were over six feet tall.

May 4 Moved by rail to Camp Wayne, West Chester
May 26 Moved by rail to Hare’s Corners, Delaware and duty there
June 6-7 Moved to Chambersburg, Pa. via rail on the Northern Central and Cumberland Valley Railroads. Attached to 4th Brigade, 1st Division, Patterson’s Army
June 13-16 Advance to the Potomac near Williamsport.
June 17 Colonel Henry Longnecker took command of the 4th Brigade when Colonel Miles was ordered to Washington.
July 1 Crossed the Potomac at Lemon’s Ferry and camped that evening near Hainesville, Virginia.

July 3 Marched via the Williamsport Turnpike to Martinsburg, Virginia.
July 15 Advance to Bunker Hill
July 17-21 At Charlestown, then to Harpers Ferry
July 22 Marched to Hagerstown, then rode the Cumberland Valley Railroad to Harrisburg.
July 29 The 9th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment mustered out
